Despite being located in a heavily disadvantaged area, with high levels of social and economic deprivation, Bowring has transformed itself from a struggling secondary to a high-performing schools in the UK achievement for its students. Bowring Community Sports School is one of the 12 original Microsoft Innovative Schools.
Innovation summary:
The aim of the school is to enable students to be independent learners, equipped with the skills to live a productive and fulfilling life in the 21st Century and to be able to contribute positively to the world. The school has developed an innovative new style of curriculum and pedagogy that better suited students' specific learning needs, supported by an online learning environment providing anytime and anywhere learning. The importance of both teachers and students being part of action research was also important. All innovations are underpinned by 21st Century learning spaces.
