A CaseNEX study:
South Fayette High School, USA

Context:
Educators at South Fayette High School are preparing students to compete in the global marketplace. Their strategy is clear: implement sweeping changes in the curriculum, set high expectations for the use of technology in every classroom, and put useful student data into the hands of teachers. Leaders hope their efforts will open doors to post-secondary options and lead students into successful careers. Case studies such as this one are “slices of life” that help educators develop the problem-solving skills needed to support student success in today’s complex, fast-paced world. The CaseNEX model  is used to support a deeper understanding of some of the key issues linked with the education reform process in this case study.

The focus for technology and school reform in this school was in the following areas:

  • Accountability
  • Assessment
  • Social studies
  • Standards
  • Technology

What is the CaseNEX model?

CaseNEXCaseNEX offers online methods that apply to everyday professional situations educators encounter. The case-analysis algorithm allows teachers to approach problems with confidence by addressing five problem-solving steps to inform their decision making.

The five steps include:

  • Identifying the issue
  • Understanding different perspectives
  • Linking knowledge with issue identified
  • Proposing actions
  • Forecasting consequences

This methodology can be used in a face to face workshop session or online exploration.

Studies have demonstrated that teachers who participate in the CaseNEX model of exploration are better in identifying problems, designing educational interventions to address them, and evaluating the effects of their teaching.

Some questions/discussions which are stimulated by this case study:

  • What forces lead to school wide curricular changes and impact on staff and students?
  • What are the consequences of using data for teachers and students?
  • What issues arise for staff development in a data driven culture?
  • What are the pros and cons of standard curriculum and common assessments?
  • What are the challenges for “digital immigrants” when teaching “digital natives”?

Some questions to support deep analysis using this case study:

What dilemmas might surface in schools undergoing curriculum alignment?  (Issues)

How might community members view a school that undertakes so much change at one time? (Perspective)

What knowledge is needed to create a "data culture"?  (Knowledge)

What can schools or individuals do to encourage female students to participate in Technology Education? (Action)
