Crescent Girls School, Singapore
Context:
Crescent Girls School (CGS) started in 1956 and is a popular girl's school in Singapore. CGS has a rich culture of using technology in teaching and learning, and in 2007 was appointed as a mentor school in the Microsoft Innovative Schools Program, mentoring 12 schools around the world.
Innovation summary:
With the vision of promoting personalized learning for every student, CGC embarked on an M-learning initiative (mobile learning anytime, anywhere). The school explored the value of Tablet PCs to support and develop a personalized learning curriculum. All staff and some year groups use Tablet PCs in their classrooms. With the development of a school-wide wireless system, this allowed learning to happen both in and outside the classroom. Teachers also started becoming co-producers of content with students. The aim was to create a student-centered mobile learning environment.
Leading questions for reflection:
- What are the benefits of mobile learning in teaching and learning?
- What practical issues will need to considered when giving personal computing devices e.g. Tablet PCs to each student (cost, security etc)?
- What training would be needed for the teachers?
- Does mobile learning add value to your current curriculum structure?
- What technical support/infrastructure is needed to support mobile learning?
