Ottobrunn, Munich, Germany

Context:
The Gymnasium in Ottobrunn is a large school of 1500 students aged between 10 and 18. It has close connections with the local business community and aims to be a positive place for both teachers and students. It clearly identifies the need to prepare students for the ever-changing demands of the 21st Century through working in a positive environment and developing their whole personality, not just their academic knowledge. It supports teachers by creating time and space for cooperation, coaching and training. The Gymnasium in Ottobrunn is one of the original 12 Microsoft Innovative Schools.

Innovation summary:
The Gymnasium in Ottobrunn is innovating with learning spaces called plazas (see also the New Line Learning Academies case study). This dynamic use of shared space in the school enables collaborative learning and teaching to take place. Re-modeling of curriculum, teaching practice and expectations is essential for this to be successful. The seamless integration of technology fit for purpose is also paramount for success. A project-based learning approach has been adopted within which peer support and assessment mechanisms are being developed and trialled.

Leading questions for reflection:

  1. How can you deal with the demands of a national curriculum and still be experimental in the classroom?
  2. What are the benefits of a more open and collaborative learning space?
  3. What new skills will teachers need to excel in this plaza model?
  4. How can you instil a culture of collaboration amongst students?
