Shireland Academy, UK
Context:
Shireland has 1110 students between the ages of 11 and 19. 70% of the students are bilingual and over 50 different languages are spoken within the student community. 40% of the students come from families of very low income and 15% of students' families are seeking asylum in the UK. Shireland's community is ethnically diverse and fractured. Shireland is a central and consistent focus point for this community.
Innovation summary:
Shireland has developed a multi-functional and hugely populated Learning Gateway. All members of the school community have their own pages and available resources: students, teachers and parents. High quality e-learning and gaming resources are available and personalized learning is at the forefront of ICT use in the academy. Teachers are encouraged to collaborate online and the access to resources and collaboration extends beyond Shirleand to other local schools and even a school in Abu Dhabi.
