Learning2Go Project, UK
Context:
The Learning2Go initiative is currently the largest mobile learning project in the UK, aiming to develop new ways to deliver exciting and motivating learning beyond the classroom. Phase 1 of the initiative started in 2003 with 120 devices in 4 schools, and the current Phase 4 saw the rollout of 1500 devices.
Innovation summary:
The aim of the project was to give students access to anywhere, anytime learning to help give them a greater desire to learn and raise standards. Students were given handheld PDAs to support their learning. The devices were funded jointly by the school and parents, were wireless enabled and had in-built imaging capabilities.
Leading questions for reflection:
- What are the benefits of 1:1 computing and is there any evidence that this makes a gain in learning?
- What are the implications of curriculum design to make effective use of 1:1 computing?
- What training would be needed for the teachers?
- Would the funding model to pay for the devices work in your context?
- What technical support is needed to support such a system?
